  • This dance, which is said to have originated in India, reached Japan during the Nara Period. It is modeled on the exquisite song and twirling dance of the Kalavinka, a bird that lives in the Buddhist paradise. The dance is now a dobu, a dance performed by children. The dancers mount the stage to the sounds of the small cymbals that they carry in their hands. As the performance begins, they dance slowly and gently in their positions. In the middle part of the dance, the cymbals begin to sound again, and the dancers’ performance present the stage as filled with flying birds. They then dance off the stage as the dance draws to a close. The dancers wear red costumes, to the backs of which beautiful feathers are attached. Their headdresses are decorated with cherry blossoms.
